In the spring of May 2011, Dalhousie Sailing Team members Ted Murphy, Justin Hall and Dave Castle challenged a team from Guelph University at Bronte Harbour Yacht Club for the right to represent Canada at the 31st edition of the Student Yachting World Cup in the Fall of 2011.

The Student Yachting World Cup is an International Sailing Federation (ISAF) sanctioned World Championship event that is attended by the best student crews from all over the world. More information can be found at the SYWoC website.

The team will race premier schools from around the world for a week of racing in La Trinité-sur-Mer, France. The racing will take place October 21-28, 2011 and Dalhousie will be fielding a team of eight to crew a one-design racing keel boat called a Grand Surprise
